Identify the court on your paperwork
Use the county and court name on your notice or existing case. For a new case, confirm where it belongs before relying on a particular county’s rules. The California Courts directory is a starting point for finding official court websites.
Open the court’s Local Rules page
Look under Forms & Filing, General Information, or Local Rules. Open the current rules and select the division that matches your matter, such as civil, family, probate, or small claims. A proposed amendment is not the same as an effective rule.
Record the version and the relevant rule
Note the rule number, effective date, and official URL. Search the document for your task: filing, exhibits, remote appearance, or hearing reservation. Read the surrounding exceptions rather than relying on a search-result snippet.
Check the rest of the instructions
Look for standing orders, department instructions, and case-specific orders. Local rules are only one layer; state law and California Rules of Court may also apply. Ask the clerk about filing procedures, and seek legal help if instructions appear to conflict.
A rule from a neighboring county may not govern your case. Keep a short source checklist and recheck it before filing.
