Lex — Database-First Legal Guide

Not legal advice • Always consult an attorney

Intake

Guidance only — not legal representation. Not for emergencies.

Intake vs Hall of Shame: Use Intake when you want private email review of your matter (contact info required). Use Hall of Shame for anonymous, public entity accountability reports — no reporter identity stored.
Private intake request

Request guidance for a legal matter

Share what is happening, explain deadlines, and attach documents. Submitted documents are converted into secure, email-viewable image attachments when conversion tools are available.

🛡️ Session-only by default 📎 Attachment rendering ⚖️ Guidance only

1

Your contact details

Only collect what is needed to respond. No account, no portal.

2

Location and matter type

This helps identify the right California pathway and whether deadlines may be involved.

3

Discuss your legal matter

Use plain language. Dates, court numbers, orders, agencies, and what you need help understanding are useful.

4

Attach documents

Images, PDFs, Word documents, RTF, and text files are accepted. Every attachment is converted into a secure JPEG image before it leaves this browser or is emailed — metadata is stripped and originals are not stored.

    5

    Confirm before sending

These confirmations keep the boundary line bright enough to see from space.

    Secure image conversion

Every upload is converted to a metadata-stripped JPEG before transmission. PDFs and office documents are also re-rendered as images for secure handling.

    Full session flush

After a successful send, you will be prompted to clear this entire browser session. Your intake will be reviewed — nothing from the intake will remain on this device.

California Legal Resource Navigator Intake is an informational guidance intake tool only. It does not create an attorney-client relationship. Verify every deadline, form, and procedure with the court, agency, legal aid, or a licensed attorney.

Public-session intake • No account required • Full session clears after successful submit.

    Resources

Official forms, glossary, legal aid directory, constitutional text, escalation contacts, and complaint guides — lookup only. Document drafting lives in Case Workspace → Document Generator.

Understands what you mean as you type — county contacts, court forms, legal terms, constitution text, complaint guides, and escalation numbers.

Need to draft a letter or court document?

Document Generator moved to Case Workspace — demand letters, guided drafts, timelines, court scripts, and filing packets with PDF/Word export.

Legacy drafting tools (demand letter, guided drafts, timeline…)

    Document Generator

Copy or download drafts — nothing is saved in this browser tab.

    👥 Who this is for

California residents and families navigating courts, agencies, jails, housing, family law, civil rights, and related systems — especially when you need plain-language orientation, county contacts, and tools to organize your next steps without hiring a lawyer first.

Good fit: Finding forms, understanding pathways, tracking deadlines locally, drafting non-attorney paperwork, reporting entity conduct anonymously, and asking Lex general questions about how to use the site.
What it is not: A law firm, emergency hotline, or substitute for a licensed attorney. It does not file papers for you, guarantee outcomes, or store private case work after your session ends. Only a backup you explicitly download with your passphrase leaves the temporary session.

    🛡️ Privacy and session disclaimer

No permanent storage by design: This website is intended to avoid keeping or storing personal information after a session ends. Information entered into the site should be treated as session-only and cleared when the session is flushed.
    • Download generated documents immediately. Documents created by the website are not kept, stored, or recoverable after the session is cleared or flushed.
    • Use caution with sensitive details. Even though session data is designed to be cleared, avoid entering Social Security numbers, financial account numbers, full medical details, private addresses, names of minors, or anything unnecessary.
    • Public or shared device warning. Close the browser tab, clear downloads when appropriate, and make sure saved PDFs or documents are not left behind on a shared computer.
    • Session flush means final. Once the session is reset, flushed, expired, or cleared, the website should not be expected to restore prior answers, drafts, documents, chat text, or uploads.

    🔐 Privacy & data flows

This site is built for public-session use: private case work should not survive after you end the session. Below is a plain-language summary of what stays in your browser and what may leave it.

No first-party cookies. This app does not set tracking or session cookies. Temporary browser storage (sessionStorage) holds private work only while your session is active.
No visitor IP logging in the app. The application does not write access logs, chat logs, or intake files to disk. Rate limits use an anonymous session identifier — not your IP address.

    What session flush clears

End Session, inactivity timeout, or a successful Secure Intake send triggers a flush. These browser-held items are removed:

    • Navigator wizard — answers, pathway results, and in-progress steps.
    • Case Workspace — saved cases, notes, timelines, and document drafts (default public-session mode).
    • AI Assistant chat — conversation history for the current session.
    • Evidence files — IndexedDB blobs and in-memory attachments tied to the workspace.
    • Forum — local post drafts (cln-forum-posts).
    • Hall of Shame / Civic Data Engine — entity reports (civic-db), composer drafts (civic-composer-draft); legacy story key migrated on load.
    • Forum session keys — alias choices and vote state for the current visit.

What may persist after flush (not private case content)

    • Display preferences — text size, contrast, and dark/light theme.
    • “Remember on this device” — only if you explicitly turn this on; otherwise cases stay session-only.

    Reference data on the site

    WhatStored?Contains PII?
Anonymous visit totalsYes — aggregate counts onlyNo — no individual tracking
Legal resource libraryYes — public reference dataNo — forms, agencies, statutes
    Chat or workspace contentNo
Intake file copies on diskNo — removed after processing

Visit totals are kept as anonymous aggregate counts so the site can understand overall traffic without tracking individuals.

When data intentionally leaves your browser

Secure Intake form. If you submit the five-step intake, contact details and matter summary are emailed for review. The form requires acknowledgment and triggers a full session flush after a successful send.
Lex & Legal Forge AI. When you use AI features, the text you send is processed to generate a reply or draft. This site does not store those messages after your session ends.
CDN scripts & hosting. External scripts (fonts, icons) and your web host may log IP addresses at the network layer. That is outside this application's control.
Important: You can still type personal details into the Navigator, workspace, chat, forum, or Hall of Shame while a session is open. Flush removes them from this browser; it does not undo email already sent through Intake or text already processed by an AI feature.
Not legal advice: This website provides legal information, organization tools, and resource guidance only. It is not a law firm and does not create an attorney-client relationship.
Verify before relying: Court rules, forms, filing instructions, service rules, and deadlines can change. Always confirm information with the court, agency, legal aid office, or a licensed attorney.
Use careful judgment: Be careful with the information you provide. While nothing is intended to be kept after your session ends, for your safety it is recommended that you proceed with caution.
